Judd Apatow has always put a smidge of saddness into his films.
Evan, the 40 year old virgin, can’t really open up to trust. Ben, in Knocked Up, must grow out of his arrested development to become a father. Peter, the muppet vampire opera composer, in Sarah Marshal lives the self-loathing pain of any guy that’s been dumped.
Or, so I understand having never been dumped by a “soul mate”. My personal badge of honor or admission of my own fear of intimacy? You decide.
This drama serves to make the characters very sympathetic and therefore more real and then funny (because it’s True). Funny people is the saddest to date for the character George (Adam Sandler) whom faces hopelessness in the throes of a fatal disease.
LO … L?
Seems like a feel good life-affirming celebration, right?
It ain’t. They cut out alot of those scenes, leaving something for the DVD, and the trailer highlights the funny over the dramatic people parts.
There’s jokes along the way - atleast chuckle worthy - but not as many as you’d expect from a story about comedians, even with dozens of cameos. Eminem has a funny scene with Ray Romano of all people that captures his volatile media image (Marshal, not Ray) and introduces the second plot turn.
It’s a daring way to write about mortality and regret comedically, but it doesn’t quite fall into either category firmly. The climax is hilarious but you have to wait through some luke warm goofy to get there.
Apatow can’t quite pull off a feel good comedy about death and a wasted life, but then again who could?Related Posts
