Move it to Movits!
When you love an art form it’s interesting to see it get global and translate the experiences of foreign cultures.
Hip hop was born in the Black and Puerto Rican urban neighborhoods of New York. What could be more opposite than that? Black/Latino? Urban? Cosmopolitan?
Swedish Hip hop? I’d say so. Still, the rhythms are there:
Fel Del Av Gården (Wrong Part of the Farm) by Swedish Jazz/Swing/Hip hop band Movits! gets the head bob like any song by The Roots (the official Hip Hop band of da Dominion).
The Roots - lyrically poetic with a jazz influenced instrumentality. The spiritual kindred of Movits! above, but the Swedes go deeper.
There was a time in the early 90’s when rap was exploring it’s jazz roots with sampling from Charlie Parker and collaborations with contemporary avatars of acid jazz like The Brand New Heavies. This is the stage that Movits! seems to be at and have included the resurgence of swing.
The influence of European ethnic music - that gypsie sound from Vampire movies and old episodes of Highlander - is strong and definative. Fitting if you consider that Romani/Slav are the Blacks of Europe. Interersting when you consider this is further evidenced by the NBA being all Black folks and if you’re not Black you’re Slav. Suffering has a soul of it’s own no matter where it happens … and it can shoot three-pointers.
Not knowing the language, I can’t really judge the lyrical compnent of the song - my favorite aspect of Hip Hop. Thanks to aplussstudent3 on Youtube, we have a translation. Do like me and read it while listening to the song:
First Verse:
Coming from the wrong part of the yard, from the other side of the track
I grew up with gypsies
playing accordion
wanting to tell my future
while my dad emptied a bottle of explorer [cheap vodka]
taught myself to play guitar and those chords
djangos quintett playing from the grammophone
with second hand suits in the closets
and brass bands live every night in the garden
Doesn’t rhyme in English, but the rhythmic meter and establishing content (reppin’ yo self) is clearly Hip Hoppy.
Sweden in da house, y’all!
