Harry Potter and the Not Half Bad Flick
I’m not of the generation that got enamored with Harry Potter - nor do I have a vagina - so I’m not a fan of Rowling’s series. Coming of age “drama” with a touch a fantasy whimsy, cliche dread and teen angst in the more recent ones aren’t a big attractant to a player of D&D and reader of true fictional classics like Dune, Lord of the Rings and the Jedi Academy series by Kevin J Anderson.
*rimshot for the Star Wars fans*
This said, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (HBP) wasn’t a hairy plopper.
I never read any of the books nor have ever sought reviews for it on the internet nor really discussed the series with anyone, so I came in fresh and was please with the pacing of the mystery as to who tghe half blood prince was. No spoilers, but I wasn’t terribly surprised. Still, when the movie was about the plot to take out a major figure of good and not whether Hermine likes Ron or who’s snogging who it was decent. Each piece of the puzzle was clear and unambiguous and set up the too long in the making end of the series answering the biggest question of non-muggles: How the fuck do we get rid of Voldemort!
Order of the Phoenix (OotP) is still my favorite so far for the way it features the students actually doing something of heroic consequence. Having already learned how to levitate feathers and not vomit slugs, they get down to some real martial magic shit. When evil goes against good some noses should be bloodied, asses kicked and chests blasted by red jets of light hurling you into the Veil (the Bellatrix v. Black special).
Half Blood Prince had far too little battling and more questing around the school to get clues, because four preceding movies of that wasn’t enough. Neither can we get enough destiny, the savior of Harry yet again. He finds a book that lets him cheat on a test to get a potion that when he remembers to drink it leads to the exposition needed for the second plot turn. In the meantime, Ron gets victimized enough to line up some sympathy pussy from Hermine … eventually. Harry does get kicked in the face though - which I kinda liked.
Does it match the book? Probably not. Don’t care. Not every director is Peter Jackson - whom actually surpassed the source material. David Yates though does another good job with HBP but not a tensely gripping as OotP but may bring it home with panche for The Deathy Hollows. It ain’t broke, don’t fix it: keep this director til franchise death.
Decent enough for non-fans, I’d see it in the theatre. My Gay-for-Harry friends better buy the popcorn though.
