You’ve probably caught the trailers of Harold Ramis’s historical comedy Year One, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, and thought it was a bit lame.
Good news: you’re not as right as you think.
The trailer ofcourse features the jokes in bite-sized samples, but only when you see the movie do you see that consistency of the humor. It doesn’t show the best gags - since there are no “best” gags. The entire story has a regular rythmn of chuckle-worthy humor throughout.
Ringing endorsement? No. Yet, this is reliability is missing from many comedies that push the envelope so hard they become dull like Dance Flick, the Scary Movies and the rest of that ilk. Pacing is about the space between highs and lows, not vainly trying to write a high plateau of 100% pants-pissed laughter.
Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Mike Cera) play the same characters they’ve always played. The former is a hedonistic self-deluded slacker (Orange County) balanced by the meekly innocent and worrisome youth(Superbad) become unlikely heroes as they transverse a demystified biblical world. Nothing original, but entertaining for the expertise of the cast in their usual roles.
If you like Mel Brook’s History of World Part 1, rent it with Year One.
