While waiting for the Christmas-time release of Assassin’s Creed 2, I’ve become a belateded fan of KotOR. Specifically, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords is the middle series PC game I’ve been sucked into like a frog through a Hutt’s lips.
It’s no surprise really. I’m a long time D20 system player and Star Wars fan: this game has both. Adding these good foundations to a philosophically interesting story and memorable cast yields the great game that is KotOR 2.
I’ve finished the game once as a glowingly good repentant Jedi and am near completing an alternate story with a monstrous Darkside crusted Sith Lord. The second plot was more fun from seeing how the designers got similar resolutions from different approaches; and, ofcourse Force choking cannon fodder that I sear through like a lightsaber cutting Tuskans … or anything else but Cortosis.
I’ve still got the fun of the original to look forward to … backwardly, but the third installment is being made by BioWare into an massive multiplayer online Role-playing game. Albeit a pretty slick looking game from the E3 trailer …
… but I don’t like MMORPGS.
I played the Star Wars Galaxies MMO for a year. I set up a pretty nice little life for my character - house on Corellia, thriving hunting business to expand while playing kloo-horn as a hobby, a wardrobe of outfits for battlegrounds and the cantina - before realizing that: A. it was a better life than my real one and B. the time I spent on it could have used to better my real life. Start the quest to get a lightsaber gem or get laid? A no brainer. So after working for a week to acquire an Adegan crystal, I celebrated by hitting the bars. The virtual tale would be veritable panty magnet.
Could this game be an exemplar that does away with the insecessant grind of spending finite life span to get a cool Mandalorian helmet? Yes, but every new piece of crap Lucas makes to cash in on could be as masterful as the original movie trilogy.
Afterall, they are making Indiana Jones 4 - you know that’s gonna be awesome.
