I’m watching the Daily Show recently and John’s guest is his long time comedian bud Denis Leary, sharp observational self destructive comic and composer of the I’m an Asshole song (da Dominion’s unofficial anthem).
While watching I wondering where the fuck he’s been for the past few years and wondering what he’s plugging, which was the FX channel series Rescue Me. And he actually plugged the show, as opposed to swapping drunken mic and feeble jew jokes back and forth as is normal for a Leary visit. I’ve heard of it but never checked it out until now, in it’s fifth season. If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you. Very True.

Alot of cock jokes, sure. Leary is one of the show writers and creators so you know it going in. For the dramatic stuff that makes up their life portrayal of post-911 New York firefighters, he’s got his partner Peter Tolan. Truth be told, Leary has fireman in the family and amongst friends - the deaths of two inspiring his The Leary Firefighters Foundation. Together, he and Tolan create a very well balanced dramatic comedy series for TV, Rescue Me. For every ridiculous situation these realistically flawed characters get into, there’s another scene showing the origins of those flaws or how there shortcomings seriously complicate their lives. Friends are for kidding around as well as support, but for the prideful hero solitude is safest. This is the Achilles heal of many a character.
Tommy Gavin (Leary) is the main protagonist and antagonist - as he’s a womanizing, self destructive, recovering alcoholic haunted by the deaths of family members in the call of duty and the faces of those he couldn’t save. Surrounding him are his crew of Ladder 62, his second family. Lt. Shea - the sidekick that takes the most shit for his good heartedness. Franco - the Puerto Rican Don Juan with a heart ofd gold. Garretty - the pseudo wise guy dumb guy (with the cheese dodddle dick above). Mikey - the young dumb guy trying to fit in with his tough compatriots. All of whom rudely bust the balls of each other until shit gets real and we see the fraternity that lies beneath with Tommy serving as reluctant big brother - the most fucked up life giving him the most wisdom.
The comradery of men is captured well by the writers without any extraneous sappiness. Hul has several seasons up for streaming, see TV done right for a change.
