Miss California gets in a scandal for showing some side-boob in photos. Really? A young lady reinforced to value her looks took a picture showcasing that asset, like Hudgens, Kardashian, Cyrus and Lohan? Prejean’s pics in these times are as scandalous as a nineteen year-old drinking wine. Vanessa Williams displayed nappy snatch more courageously twenty-five years ago and as much tit profile and airbrushed ass last year.
We turn from a beauty pageant runner up to another woman of scandalous opinion, but on the opposite pole of the female spectrum: old, Black lesbian Wanda Sykes (I PROMISE no nude pics of her follow).
She starts going downhill at 1:13 with the pre-racial Sojourner Truth comment. Since white folks elected this Negro president, to call them racist is racist, right? Do white folks know who she is? Do Black folks know her work? Do Black woman know Truth’s fight? I wrote a report on her in sixth grade, so I can admit with full shame to have forgotten the specifics of her contributions. Still, she doesn’t look like Aunt Jemima and was not Lincoln’s secretary/lover!
The source of salaciousness starts at 2:03, about twelve minutes into her routine where I’d expect the A-list material to come in. Since they’re groaning about Cindy buying John McCain a helicopter (a validly funny joke) there’s no surprise they’re going to be uptight about Limbaugh, especially when Republicans are in attendance. Teasing that he’s a 911 terrorist is a more overt reflection of what they said about Obama being a closet Muslim during the campaign. Limbaugh himself has said, “The difference between Los Angeles and yogurt is that yogurt comes with less fruit.” That strikes Sykes specifically to the core of what she loves. Still, wishing him kidney failure does strafe the line a bit. It’s a waste of a wish since his hobby will take care of that already.
All Sykes did was bring too much real opinion into an audience of politicians (fakers) and reporters (Truth spinners). It wasn’t funny enough to be really scandalous like Colbert’s bit at the Correspondent’s Dinner under Bush. Everyone acted like Secret Service was going to yank him off the podium.
That’s hilariously awkward.
