Guess what anime series they’re bastardizing into live action now? Street Fighter - that’s been jacked up several different versions, with or without Van Damme. I envy your ignorance for having guessed that. Dragon Ball - Hollywood has fucked up that already. They may have got Chatwin’s hair pretty close, but the innocently optimistic spirit of Goku is lost.
The correct answer is sadly my beloved Cowboy Bebop, the best anime of the 90’s according to thousands of fans and Da Dominion itself - which is dominused by one mega fan of the series. You’d think it would be an easy translation to make. There are no mystical effects to CG up and it’s action comedy with a Film Noir/Western feel, and no one conjures such a smoothly sophisticated style like … Keanu Reeves?
Bill - or, is it Ted - Neo is cast as the lead character Spike Spiegel. The soft-spoken bounty hunter whom catches his quarry with more cunning and flexibility than bullets or muscle. We know Keanu can be soft spoken, especially if you count mute intensity as a form of that, but can a director give the illusion of his cunning? We’ve seen them dress him in competence, by the third Matrix movie and in Constantine, but cunning is a subtle beast to leash.
It’s noticing the bounty’s racing program in his coat pocket. Calling the bookies he owes big to flush him. Scouting his likely escape route given the size of the crowd at the track. Casually pointing your gun as the deadbeat rounds the corner just ahead of the goons on his ass and convincing him to come with you before they enter the equation. All without seeming arrogant about your smarts - like this douche.
Keanu could pull it off. We’ve seen him fight a park full of Hugo Weavings, trap a demon in a mirror and even emote a convincing emotion once in a while - just cant recall the latter. Many of the anime directors/creators are on board to produce. They have Peter Craig scriptwriting, which is as informative as me telling you that Frank Johnson is my uncle. Director we don’t know, but given the subject matter I could see Guy Ritchie doing well if he were willing to compromise his visual style a bit. The casting of the support cast is crucial as well. I could see Jet Black being played by Josh Brolin or Bruce Willis. Faye Valentine NEEDS to be Keira Knightley, just see Domino to see the connection. Edward, the delusional tomboy super leet hacker, is tough - likely to be a complete unknown.
Too much unknown at this point, maybe we’ll luck out and they don’t make it. Leaving me with my pristine series on DVD unsullied by the touch of this inspiration-desperate industry.
