Watch men dominate Top Chef
A full review of the masterpiece that is the movie Watchmen will take time to fully digest, construct and commit to words. I must firstly finish the graphic novel, for a full comparison of original to its digital adaptation. And, of course, I’ve got to see the actual movie. Yeah, I’m lame.
Getting time to get to the theatre will now be easier with the slight opening in the media schedule created by the finale of Top Chef Season Five. Like the comic-based film, there were surprises and mysteries in this culinary contest - although Doc Manhattan would’ve won this season … or any, being the Top Sentient Entity he is.
Several months back, I wrote about this season with some predictions that have mostly panned out. Leah wasn’t good enough hang. Cutey had the technical skill but not enough imagination to impress the judges. She was eliminated for not being able to copy a certain gourmet dish she‘d previously tasted, so left it incomplete. You might as well fucking quit right there if you‘re playing it safe to that level. If you can’t replicate, then innovate. That she lasted longer was Jamie, last member of “Team Rainbow”, was a real surprise. I pegged the lethal lesbian to go to the finals at least, if not be in the final two with Stefan.
Did the British bastard make it to the finals, sure he did. For all his attitude, his cooking and presentation backed him up, mostly. Mafucka didn’t win. The last challenge was a four course meal where Stefan made a good appetizer, lame first course, perfect second course followed with a blah desert: uneven overall but he stood by it. He was good but refused to learn as he went, which is dumbest of all considering the caliber of competition he lived with during the contest. Lots to absorb, even from “sweet girl” Carla.
Sista girl really surprised me. Once she stopped playing along with her wack teammates, listening to their ideas or letting them intimidate her, she started doing her in a big way. Puttin’ that love of food on the plate was her thing and you’d think such a sentimental technique wouldn’t get her far, but the judges gave the affection back. Carla got to the final three, beyond my estimation, but choked and died at the finish line for the reason I brought up mid-season. Their sous- chefs for the last challenge were runners up from past seasons and she took the advice of her runner up - someone that failed Top Chef before. She didn’t stay true to herself for the sake of humoring another’s idea … and fuckin lost because of it. Before they even announced she was out of it, poor lady was wracked with sobbing. Epic Fail!
So, who won?
Hosea did! Stefan looks like an albino tortoise, but Top Chef Rosenberg succeeded by practicing the virtues of that lethargic beast, the tortoise not the Brit. He didn’t win a lot of challenges or eliminations but steady made good food through out and maintained that consistency. Carla would’ve won had she stayed True to herself. Stefan if he opened his mind a bit and wasn’t so arrogant. Hosea kept to his strengths, executed them great and did two main courses instead of having a desert - though meat lovers like me would call Venison a worthy meal ender.
For his fidelity - Truth in representation - Hosea as Season Five Top Chef is a Dominion-approved judgment. What favorites did you call? Did you see him winning? Which competitor was your favorite for this season?
