Dominion Designs - D20 Modern meets 4th Edition Pt.2
Modern heroes are definitely heroic, in that tier concept 4th Ed has illustrated. With advanced classes, they can go well into paragon rankings as well to closely model some Arnold Schwartzenegger protagonist like Jack Slater in Last Action Hero or John Kimble in Kindergarten Cop - if you homebrew a Fun Educator advanced class. The epic tier is too far from reality I think to cohere with the gritty style of Modern. In U.S. history/mythology, the last epic tiered character would be George Washington, and with just cause.
Advanced classes could be easily changed into paragon paths but wouldn’t quite match their feel since you can get them much sooner than 11th level. “Advanced Paths” or “Career Foci” may be a better concept and label applied. Requirements can be greatly simplified: Base Attack bonus times two would give the level at which the focus can be taken. Necessitating the training of certain skills and taking of certain feats can be done away with, since a player likely has done this in following their concept. Like any other added class, a number (equal to the Int or Wisdom modifier) of the class skills of the path could become trained. The class abilities get added as normal.
What if the purely smart librarian decides to become a martial artist? OK, that would be crazy bat shit bananas - or a made for cable movie. One prerequisite we can stomach: you must have most of your levels in the basis class of the path you choose, so Noah Wyle better get a level or three of Strong first to master the way of the inkpad date stamp: “You’re overdue … for an ass kicking! YAAH!”
Combat can be fully switched over to the simplified system of 4th edition D&D. If you want to continue to call squares 5ft increments for the sake of immersion it won’t crash the game. Reflex defense is so close to Modern’s Defense stat you might as well cut it out and have attacks targeting a difficulty of 10 + half character level + Dex or Int modifiers and any other modifiers. The change gives nerd heroes, the saddest of them all since really you’re often just playing yourself, added survivability. It’s got enhanced verisimilitude as well, since any high school Poindexter often uses smarts to avoid wedgies and getting shoved into lockers. Can’t this carry forward into adult mortal combat?
Ranged weapons as a big part of Modern combat must receive a few tweaks. Range increments divided by five give you their normal range in squares, double the normal range is the maximum range. Ta-dah! Auto fire weapons would do a three by three area blast attack as far out as their normal range targeting Reflex defense, but the area can not move past cover or intervening targets - so you can‘t blast a cluster of thugs 8 squares away if a couple of allies are between you and the enemies. If three of those eight thugs are outside of the nine square area, the closest must be targeted first.
Healing, death and dying need some attention to keep the grit of Modern. Bloodied is still half your total HP, but when you reach this amount you become Slowed automatically - and it‘s called Hurt, “bloodied“ is too … medievally. At half your Blood … Hurt value, a fourth of your max HP, you become Beat Up and suffer the Weakened condition as well as Slowed. The conditions remain until your HP number raises higher than the amount that brought on the condition.
Healing surges work similar in that they restore a fourth of your hit points back. Level plus Con bonus equals the amount of surges you can use per day at the normal times under 4th edition rules. Should you end up dying you can drop to no lower than your negative Constitution score before joining the fertilizer club.
Next time we’ll go over the powers the available in Modern and update them to this new system. If I’ve fucked up along the way or are overlooking something I invite you to point it out.
