If you brought back Billy D and made him half white, I'd half (heh) expect Frank Gorshin from ST:TOS to come busting out to arrest him for being white on the wrong side or something. The Joker's origins are numerous, diverse and hotly contested to this day, them not exploring it, but suggesting different explanations pulled out of his ass was a very intelligent move. I last saw TDK with my wife and one of her friends, both women, both possessing ovaries, both loved it, so I'm not certain where your panelists indifference comes from.
